SHAVED TURKEY
SWISS CHEESE
MOZZARELLA & PROVOLONE
HONEY MUSTARD
FRENCHT TOAST CRUMBLE
STRAWBERRY DRIZZLE
WOOD FIRED CRUST
A customer threw this idea at me last Saturday. He came in with a photo and a detailed description and everything. I made a few small modifications, and I could cry. Shaved smoked ham & turkey, swiss cheese, honey mustard, french toast crumble, and a drizzle of strawberry jam.
Ok, right here I can feel some of you crinkling your face up at that list of toppings, so let me explain.
The Monte Cristo Sandwich was wildly popular in restaurants across the country from the 1920's-60's. I still see variations of it on brunch menus from time to time, and it's always phenomenal. An Americanized version of the French Croque Monsieur, it's essentially ham & swiss stuffed french toast. Many of the Midwest variations add a little mustard and turkey, too. It's one of those confusingly delightful foods that plays with sweet and savory in a seductive kind of way. Nearly every sandwich I've ever had is better as a pizza. And this is just more proof.
